Although no formal educational is typically required, some companies prefer to hire material moving machine operators who have a high school diploma. Some machines may require more training than others.
In order to operate equipment as part of your daily job, you’ll need to have good hand eye coordination. In addition, you should be detail-oriented and observant of your surroundings in order to maintain a safe working environment on the job site.
After two years, you may decide to complete the training necessary to obtain a certificate to operate cranes and excavation machines. These jobs will require at least two years of experience working as construction equipment operators, hoist and winch operators, or riggers and signalers.
After five years, you may move towards more supervisory roles as you continue to grow and advance you experience in the field. Operators will need to be continually recertified.
After ten years, operators may continue towards even more supervisory roles and may expect to continue obtaining certifications.
